Pink Shirt Day - Activity Ideas!

PINK SHIRT DAY

Pink Shirts and Ghost Chips - Tearaway

Pink shirt day is a nationwide campaign that aims to raise awareness about bullying in schools, workplaces and communities. On this day, we are encouraged to wear a pink shirt (or anything pink) as a symbol of solidarity with those who have experienced bullying.

Bullying can have lasting effects on individuals, impacting their mental health and self-esteem; therefore, Pink Shirt Day raises awareness about all the harmful effects of bullying as well as the importance of showing respect, kindness and empathy. We have the power to make a difference by choosing empathy over apathy, and support over silence.

It is time to come together as a community to celebrate diversity, and to take a stand against bullying in all its forms. Let us continue to support and promote Pink Shirt Day to create a more inclusive and respectful world for all!

🌟 As an educator, you can educate students (and families) about the importance of standing up against bullying, promoting positive relationships, and creating a culture of inclusivity and acceptance.  ðŸ™Œ

Below I have listed some activity ideas that you can do with your class:

🌸 Have a pink-themed shared lunch. You could bring pink Marshmallows and pink-themed biscuits, red velvet cupcakes, cake with pink icing etc. Make sure to consult with families regarding allergies and dietary requirements/restrictions/
🌸 Have a class movie session where you can watch uplifting and friendship-themed movies. The movies that I would select for my class would be: LEO, Inside Out, The Secret Life of Pets, Sing, Trolls, Happy Feet and Boss Baby.
🌸 This will have to be done with the permission of the school leadership team but set up a fundraiser to raise money for a local anti-bullying organization or charity.
🌸 On an A3 piece of paper, draw an outline of a pink shirt and get your students to write positive messages about kindness and respect.
🌸 Make appreciation cards for friends, classmates, parents and work colleagues. Prove some coloured paper, felts and decoration materials and let the students make as many cards as they like. Maybe have a supervised glitter table where you call students up in pairs so they can sprinkle glitter on their cards.
🌸 Have students create pink shirt day posters to display around the class. This can serve as a reminder of promoting kindness and acceptance in your classroom.
🌸 Encourage students to perform short skits related to the theme of anti-bullying and kindness.  You can get students to get into groups of 3-4 and give them a supporting idea they can base their skit on. Then they can all perform in front of the class.
🌸 Have students participate in a kindness challenge where they perform acts of kindness for their classmates and teachers throughout the day. Then, at the end of the day, you can bring the class into a big circle and reflect on their experiences, helping them elaborate on how great they felt!
🌸 Work together as a class to create a Pink Shirt Day video to share with the school or community. In your video, you can have a positive message or a quote that you say together.
🌸 You can split the class up into groups and get them to research about Pink Shirt Day, its significance, and why it is important to stand up against bullying. Then you can have a fun class quiz or a Kahoot activity prepared based on this topic.
🌸 A great mindfulness activity to end the day can be a colouring worksheet based on the Pink Shirt Day theme. If you are in New Zealand, you can find beautiful, printable colouring templates on the official Pink Shirt Day website linked here: https://pinkshirtday.org.nz/resources?keyword=&for-schools=#search
